There are around 3,500 general practitioners (GPs) currently working in Ireland. As GPs provide a broad service, they are usually the first medical professional a person turns to when they feel unwell. GPs play a central role in the health of our community, caring for people at every stage of life, from birth to old age.
The Irish College of GPs trains and supports general practitioners in Ireland throughout their career, from initial training to lifelong learning, research and advocacy.
As a membership organisation, the ICGP is responsible for providing and supporting continuous professional development for general practitioners, numbering over 4,500. Continuing medical education (CME) for GPs is largely provided through the medium of small group peer review activity. The CME small group networks aims to develop and support excellent patient care in Irish General Practice through the delivery of continuous medical education, which promotes evidence-based medicine with shared decision making, along with GP personal development.
